Yannis Tsarouchis (Greek: Γιάννης Τσαρούχης; 1910 – 1989) was a Greek modernist painter and set designer who achieved international fame, and was “known in particular for his homoerotic subjects,” including soldiers, sailors, and nude males.
The exhibition The Piraeus of Yannis Tsarouchis held in 1993 was an important artistic event that highlighted the relationship between the leading Greek painter Yannis Tsarouchis and the city of Piraeus. Tsarouchis, known for his unique approach to modern Greek painting, often drew inspiration from the Greek landscape, everyday life, folk art and tradition, while at the same time incorporating modern artistic trends. Piraeus was central to Tsarouchis’ themes. As a port, Piraeus combined cosmopolitan air and folk tradition, two elements that fascinated him. The landscapes of Piraeus, with its neoclassical buildings, harbour, sailors, and neighbourhoods, inspired many of his works, where he captured the atmosphere of the city in a nostalgic yet modern way.
