Joseph A. L. Errigo (1903–1982) was a lawyer based in Wilmington, Delaware. He was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church and the Sons of Italy. As the National Chairman of the Immigration Committee, he testified before the Judiciary Committee, maintained personal contact with Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and played a significant role in the liberalization of U.S. immigration laws. From 1965 to 1966, he served as Wilmington’s Commissioner of Public Safety. However, like Barone, the protagonist of his novel, he was convicted of forgery and sentenced to five years in prison. He was released on parole in 1968.
