Efstratios Efstratiadis (1871 – 1946) was a Greek journalist and scholar. He worked for a number of years for the newspaper “Skrip” as a columnist, while he also left behind a literary work, the fruit of which were novels and short stories. The most important and best known of his works are “To Rimadi”” (Athens Academy Award), “E Arete-The Virtues” (which was used by the Greek Ministry of Education), “Arachni-Spider” etc. He also published his impressions of the Greek-Turkish War of 1897.

The Greco-Turkish War of 1897 (also known in Greece as the Black War of ’97 or the Unfortunate War) was a war between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Greece in 1897. The immediate cause was the Cretan Question, in which the Greek majority of the Ottoman province of Crete desired union with Greece. Despite the decisive Ottoman military victory, the autonomous Cretan State under Ottoman suzerainty was established the following year (as a result of intervention by the Great Powers after the war), with Prince George of Greece and Denmark as the first High Commissioner. This was the first war effort in which the military and political personnel of Greece were tested after the Revolution of 1821 and its bankruptcy in December 1893. Although it was a military defeat, the war of 1897 is considered an important milestone for Cretan autonomy and the path towards union with Greece.
