Arnold Haskell (1903–1980) was a British dance critic, writer, and influential advocate for ballet. He played a key role in popularizing ballet in the 20th century, particularly in Britain. Haskell is best known for his support of the Sadler’s Wells Ballet (which later became The Royal Ballet) and for promoting the work of choreographer Ninette de Valois. He wrote extensively about ballet, helping to educate audiences and critics alike. One of his most famous books, Balletomania (1934), provided an accessible introduction to the art form and helped cultivate a new generation of ballet enthusiasts. Beyond writing, Haskell was also involved in ballet education. He was instrumental in establishing the Royal Ballet School in London and served as its director from 1946 to 1955. His influence extended internationally, as he supported ballet companies and schools in various countries.
