About the book: This edition is a remarkable literary artifact from 19th-century Greece and a key moment in the dissemination of Byron’s work to a philhellenic audience. The poem itself—rich in romanticism, revenge, and Eastern imagery—had a lasting cultural impact, particularly in Greece, where Byron remains a beloved figure for his support of Greek independence. In 1857 the lawyer and politician of the newly founded Greece, Konstantinos Dosios, published this first Greek edition of Lord Byron’s The Giaour, translated by his wife, Ekaterini, who had died the year before.

Ekaterini Dosiou (1820–1856) was a pioneering Greek intellectual and translator of the 19th century. Born into a prominent Phanariot family in Constantinople, she received an exceptional education and was fluent in several European languages. Married to politician Konstantinos Dosiou, she was also the mother of Aristidis Dosiou, known for his attempted assassination of Queen Amalia in 1861. Ekaterini Dosiou’s work contributed significantly to the cultural exchange between Greece and Europe during the post-independence era.
