About the Book

A rare early 20th-century Greek historical novel by Dimitrios Dimitrakos, one of Greece’s most prolific publishers and cultural figures. The Last Byzantine Princes reinterprets Georges-Gustave Toudouze’s La Dernière des Spartiates, transforming it into a deeply Hellenic narrative centered on Mystras and the Byzantine legacy of the Peloponnese.

While Toudouze’s original emphasized French influence on the Morea and the Villehardouin dynasty, Dimitrakos’ adaptation corrects these historical inaccuracies, restoring Mystras and its rulers to their rightful place within Byzantine and Greek history.

The book is beautifully illustrated by Petros Roumpos (1873–1942), an acclaimed sculptor and painter known for his refined academic style and contribution to early 20th-century Greek art.
