About Aspasia Papathanasiou (1918–2020)
Aspasia Papathanasiou was a celebrated Greek actress and writer, widely regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of ancient Greek tragedy. A graduate of the National Theatre’s Drama School, her distinguished career included collaborations with major Greek theatre companies and acclaimed performances of roles such as Electra, Medea, Phaedra, and Clytemnestra. Exiled during the 1967 dictatorship, she continued her theatrical work across Europe and the U.S., performing monologues from ancient dramas and recitations of Yiannis Ritsos’ works. In 1975, she co-founded the cultural organization “Desmoi”, promoting theatrical outreach across Greece. Her contributions to Greek theatre and cultural education remained influential for decades.
