Description
Beautiful and rare limited-edition artist’s album bringing together six poems by Paul Éluard and six original woodcuts by Zizi Makri, one of the most important figures of Greek printmaking.
Published in 2000 by Ellinika Grammata, this finely produced edition was printed in 900 numbered copies on Fabriano 280 g/m² paper and is hand-signed by Zizi Makri, making it highly desirable for collectors of surrealist poetry, illustrated books, and modern Greek art.
The poems—originally written after Éluard’s 1949 visit to Greece, where he met partisan fighters in the mountains of Gramos—are presented in French with Greek translations by Eleni Bibikou-Antoniadi. The accompanying woodcuts were created by Makri from her original 1949 Paris woodblocks, preserving the historical and artistic continuity of the work.

About Paul Éluard
Paul Éluard was a founding figure of Surrealism and later one of the most powerful poetic voices of resistance in 20th-century Europe. Known as the “Poet of Freedom,” he wrote clandestinely during World War II and used poetry as a tool of political and humanist expression. Grèce, ma rose de raison stands among his most emotionally charged works, inspired by Greece’s post-war struggle.
About the Artist – Zizi Makri
Zizi Makri studied engraving in Paris under Dimitris Galanis and lived much of her life in exile due to her political beliefs. Her work spans engraving, book illustration, mosaics, and tapestries, and she exhibited internationally across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
