370.00

An attractive and historically significant nineteenth-century wood engraving depicting scenes associated with the capture and release of Colonel Synge in northern Greece, presented in a remarkable custom-made artistic frame by the Greek artist and master framer Panos Lainopoulos.

Produced for publication in the illustrated press of the Victorian era, this original engraving documents a dramatic episode that attracted considerable international attention and was widely reported throughout Europe. Beyond its historical importance, it preserves rare contemporary views of northern Greece, combining landscape, architecture, and local history in a finely executed composition.

The engraving consists of four separately captioned scenes:

The Bermium Hills and the Greek Town of Naousa from Tricovista House (8 cm × 11 cm)
Mount Olympus from Tricovista House (8 cm × 11 cm)
Tricovista House, Residence of Colonel Synge, where he was seized by the Brigands (9.5 cm × 22 cm)
The Landing-place of Katerini, where the negotiations for the release of Colonel Synge were carried on (12 cm × 22 cm)

These views offer a fascinating visual record of the Greek landscape during the late nineteenth century and illustrate a notable incident of brigandage that captured the imagination of the Victorian public.

The Frame

The engraving is housed in an exceptional handcrafted frame created by Panos Lainopoulos, transforming the piece into a unique mixed-media artwork.

Far more than a conventional frame, Lainopoulos’s creation incorporates painted and textured decorative elements inspired by Greek vernacular architecture and landscape traditions. The result is a visual dialogue between a Victorian historical print and contemporary Greek artistic craftsmanship.

The frame significantly enhances the presentation and makes the work equally appealing as a decorative object and as a collectible historical piece.
