Greek Prison Service Archive (1937–1960) – WWII & Italian Occupation – Family Archive of Two Correctional Officers (21 Documents)

An exceptional and historically significant archive comprising 21 original official documents relating to the careers of two members of the same family employed within the Greek Prison Service between 1937 and the early 1960s.

Covering the late interwar period, the Greco-Italian War, the Italian Occupation of Greece, and the post-war reconstruction years, this archive offers a rare and comprehensive insight into the administration of the Greek correctional system during one of the most turbulent periods of modern Greek history.

The central figure is L. B., whose documented career began in 1937 at the prison of Kalami (Izzedin Fortress), Chania, Crete. The archive follows his professional advancement through the Greek Prison Service, including his training at the Guard Personnel School, wartime mobilization, and subsequent appointments to several of Greece’s most important correctional institutions.

The most historically important section consists of 15 original wartime documents dating from 1940 to 1944, recording his service during the Axis Occupation.

Among them is an official Italian administrative document signed by Colonel Camillo Maoli, providing rare documentary evidence of cooperation between the Greek prison administration and the Italian occupation authorities.

Another document issued in 1944 records the officer’s status as a war-disabled veteran, adding an important personal and military dimension to the archive.

Following the liberation of Greece, the archive continues to document his public service career through assignments to Kifissia Prison and juvenile correctional institutions during the 1950s.

An especially noteworthy feature is the inclusion of official service records relating to his wife, V. M., who served as a correctional officer at the Women’s Prison of Kifissia during the late 1950s. Archives documenting both husband and wife serving within the Greek correctional system are exceptionally uncommon.

Completing the archive is the couple’s marriage certificate issued by the Church of Saint Demetrios, Kifissia, firmly establishing the provenance and integrity of this remarkable family collection.
