A rare and historically important illustrated Armenian dictionary by Simon Gabamadjian, published in Constantinople in 1907 and representing an important contribution to Armenian lexicography at the beginning of the 20th century.

The volume is printed entirely in Armenian and contains approximately 800 pages plus preliminary leaves, with numerous period woodcut illustrations accompanying the text.

This 1907 edition/section covers the alphabetic range from Ա to Հաւանեցուցանեմ.

It should be distinguished from Gabamadjian’s earlier 1892 edition and from the substantially enlarged 1910 edition.

Illustrations

An especially attractive feature of the work is its series of woodcut illustrations, depicting botanical specimens, animals, tools, objects and other subjects.

These illustrations are not merely decorative: they form part of the dictionary’s approach to explaining Armenian vocabulary and provide an interesting visual record of the material culture and scholarly publishing of the period.

Ottoman Constantinople

The book is an important document of the Armenian intellectual and publishing culture of Ottoman Constantinople.

The title pages retain contemporary Ottoman administrative printing approval, providing additional documentary interest and preserving evidence of the regulatory environment under which Armenian-language books were published in the Ottoman capital.

Condition

Original period binding, apparently half-leather with decorated boards.

The binding exhibits normal age-related wear, including rubbing to the edges and corners, together with an attractive overall patina consistent with a book more than a century old.

The interior is generally well preserved for its age. Text and illustrations remain clearly legible. There are signs of age and handling, but no major tears or severe staining are apparent from the supplied photographs.

As with any book dating from 1907, minor age-related imperfections should be expected.
