The work was produced for the study of Hebrew by theology students in 19th-century Greece and is an interesting document of the development of theological and biblical scholarship at the newly established University of Athens.
Vimpos studied theology in Athens, Kyiv, Saint Petersburg and Leipzig. He returned to Greece and was appointed extraordinary professor of theology at the University of Athens in 1860, becoming a regular professor in 1867. During his academic career he taught Hebrew and the introduction to, and exegesis of, the Old Testament based on the Hebrew text. He also served as Dean of the School of Theology in Athens in 1868–1869.
The book was printed in Athens in 1866, only a few decades after the establishment of the modern Greek state, and provides a tangible example of the scholarly and educational activity of the period.
The volume has an attractive 19th-century Greek title page, with traditional typography and a neoclassical woodcut vignette depicting a cornucopia.
