Original Greek political proclamation, 1933, concerning the attempted assassination of Eleftherios Venizelos.
An important contemporary historical document issued by Ioannis Mountzouridis (Ι. Μουντζουρίδης) in his capacity as Minister and Governor-General of Crete (Υπουργός Γενικός Διοικητής Κρήτης).
The one-page proclamation, headed:
«ΔΙΑΓΓΕΛΜΑ ΤΟΥ ΥΠΟΥΡΓΟΥ ΓΕΝΙΚΟΥ ΔΙΟΙΚΗΤΟΥ ΚΡΗΤΗΣ ΠΡΟΣ ΤΟΝ ΚΡΗΤΙΚΟΝ ΛΑΟΝ»
(Proclamation of the Minister Governor-General of Crete to the Cretan People)
reports the attempted assassination of Eleftherios Venizelos in Athens during the night of 6 June 1933.
The proclamation states that the attempt was fortunately unsuccessful and reports injuries to Mrs. Venizelos, the chauffeur, and the President’s escort Markakis. Mountzouridis announces that the government had proceeded with arrests and calls upon the people of Crete to receive the news with composure.
The document is particularly interesting because it demonstrates the immediate official reaction in Crete to one of the most consequential political attacks of interwar Greece. The assassination attempt occurred during an exceptionally tense period of the Greek political conflict.
Ioannis Mountzouridis was a Greek politician who served as Minister and Governor-General of Crete and subsequently as Minister of the Interior in 1933–1934.
