1939, Greece, E.O.N. Youth Organisation Gold Medal Diploma, Triple Jump, Sparta, Metaxas Era Original Document

180.00€

An exceptionally rare and visually striking original Greek historical document, issued on 23 July 1939 by the National Youth Organisation of Greece (Εθνική Οργάνωσις Νεολαίας – Ε.Ο.Ν.), during the authoritarian regime of Ioannis Metaxas.

This impressive large-format athletic diploma was awarded in Sparta, Greece, to Panagiotis Giougoulis (Παναγιώτης Γιουγκούλης) for achieving First Place and receiving a Gold Medal in the Triple Jump (Άλμα Τριπλούν).

An authentic survivor from the final summer before the outbreak of the Second World War, this document offers a fascinating insight into organised youth activities, athletics, official ceremonial culture and political iconography in Greece during the late 1930s.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The National Youth Organisation (E.O.N.) was established in 1936 under the government of Ioannis Metaxas. It played a central role in the regime’s youth policy, promoting physical education, discipline, organised sporting activities and national identity.

The organisation was influenced by contemporary authoritarian youth movements elsewhere in Europe. Its documents and visual material are now of historical interest to collectors studying the Metaxas dictatorship and interwar European political history.

Issued in Sparta on 23 July 1939, this diploma dates from a particularly significant moment in European history, only a few weeks before the German invasion of Poland and the beginning of the Second World War.

DESIGN AND DOCUMENT DETAILS

The certificate features a spectacular period design dominated by the large E.O.N. emblem, decorated with an elaborate classical ornamental composition.

A distinctive blue-and-white ribbon motif runs vertically along the left side, while the lower section features an illustration of ancient Greek athletes in motion, visually connecting contemporary sporting achievement with the classical athletic tradition of ancient Greece.

The central text contains the original handwritten award details, including:

  • Recipient: Panagiotis Giougoulis (Παναγιώτης Γιουγκούλης)
  • Award: Gold Medal (Μετάλλιον Χρυσούν)
  • Achievement: First Place (Νίκη Πρώτη)
  • Sporting event: Triple Jump (Άλμα Τριπλούν)
