The Royal Theater (today’s  National Theatre of Greece) was commissioned by King George I and designed by the architect Ernst Ziller. It was built between 1895 and 1901, but went bankrupt in 1908 and was forced to close. The building was renovated in 1930 and 1931 under the supervision of the set designer Kleovoulos Klonis. Angelos Vlachos became the first director. It reopened in 1932. Dimitris Horn made his debut at the theatre in 1941. Maria Callas played in Tosca from August 27 to September 2, 1942. Alexis Minotis was the long-time director. Melina Mercouri was briefly involved in the theatre in 1944, but was viewed as clumsy. A special feature in the 1960s was that it had a professional choir.
