Rare first edition of Nerses V. Ashtarakezi’s Sacred History of the Church of the Old and New Testaments, printed in Moscow in 1832 at the printing house of the Armenian Seminary of the Lazarian (Lazarev) Institute.

The title page states that the work was published during the patriarchate of Catholicos John VIII of All Armenians, under the supervision of Archbishop Nerses, who would later become Catholicos Nerses V. Ashtarakezi (1843–1857), one of the most influential leaders of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the nineteenth century.

Born Toros Harutjuni Shahasisyan (1770–1857), Nerses V. Ashtarakezi was a distinguished theologian, educator, and churchman. He played a central role in the revival of Armenian ecclesiastical life under the Russian Empire and was instrumental in promoting Armenian education and publishing. His election as Catholicos in 1843 marked the culmination of a lifetime devoted to the Armenian Church and its cultural heritage.

This volume was printed at the Lazarian (Lazarev) Armenian Seminary in Moscow, one of the foremost educational and cultural institutions of the Armenian diaspora. Later known as the Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages, it became an internationally respected centre for Armenian scholarship, theology, and Oriental studies, producing many of the nineteenth century’s most important Armenian publications.

Printed entirely in Classical Armenian (Grabar), this scarce work is an important example of early nineteenth-century Armenian religious printing and is of considerable interest to collectors of Armenian history, theology, and ecclesiastical literature.

Good antique condition. Complete copy in its contemporary half leather binding. Age-related wear to the binding, with light browning and occasional foxing consistent with its age.
