Z  is a novel , published in 1966, the subject of which is based on the assassination of deputy Grigoris Lambrakis in Thessaloniki in 1963. It was brought to the screen in 1969 by Costa-Gavras. Vassilikos chose the letter Z, wanting it to sound like Zei (greek for he lives) to refer to the slogan of the citizens at the funeral of Lambrakis, a slogan that simultaneously expressed the desire of the majority of the Greek people for freedom and democracy.
