Charisios Papamarkou (1844-1906) was born in Velvendos, Macedonia and in 1850 settled with his family in Piraeus. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens and gained experience as a Greek teacher and professor. In 1871 he left for Germany for studies as a scholarship of the Association for Dissemination of Greek Letters and in 1875 it was proclaimed PhD from the University of Göttingen. Ηe was one of the most important figures in the History of Modern Greek Education of the second half of the 19th century.
