Aristidis Chrysovergis was a Greek officer who led the Hellenic Legion of Emperor Nicholas I during the Crimean War. He was born in 1812 in Mesimvria of the Black Sea (today’s Nessebar, Bulgaria) to a middle-class Greek family. Chrysovergis studied at the “Hellenic Commercial School of Odessa”. In 1828, Russia declared war on Turkey, after 7 years of a bloody liberation struggle of Greece. Chrysovergis abandoned his studies and joined the ranks of the Greek revolutionaries towards the end of the war. He later went on to serve in the Greek Royal Army.
