Nikos Kavvadias (1910 – 1975) was a Greek poet, writer and a sailor by profession. He used his travels around the world, the life at sea and its adventures, as powerful metaphors for the escape of ordinary people, outside the boundaries of reality. His poems are widely regarded as belonging to symbolism, and he has been characterized by some as a poète maudit.
Nikos Kavadias’ poetry collection Pousi was first published in 1947, by Α. Karavias, and contains 14 poems. There were three more editions thereafter, the last being by Agra Editions. This is the second poetry collection of Kavvadias, but also in general his second published book, with Marabou (1933) preceding it and Traverso (1975) following. Apart from the dedications that each poem has, the collection is dedicated to his sister, Elga Kavvadia.
