Dimitrios Bernardakis was born in Agia Marina, Lesbos in 1833. He comes from Crete. He completed his studies alongside Grigorio Gennadio and in 1849 enrolled at the Philosophical School of Athens. While he was a student he worked as a journalist and tutor. In 1856, he was awarded at the Rallies poetry competition with his epilyrical composition Ikasias and left with a scholarship for Germany. He studied in Munich and Berlin and in 1860 he was awarded a doctor of philosophy. In 1861 he returned to Athens and was appointed professor in the Chair of General History and Philology at the University in 1865. Of particular importance are the riots caused by his attitude towards the language issue and his dispute with Kondo in 1869, events that led him to return to his native land. He stayed there until 1882 when he returned to the University at the request of Harilaos Trikoupis and at the same time assumed the position of curator of the National Library. A year later he was forced to leave again for Mytilene until the end of his life. He died in January 1907.

Bernardakis was prolific. His first work is Maria Doxapatri, which he finishes in 1857, unsuccessfully submits to the Raleigh poetry competition and publishes it in Munich in 1858. He was the first theoretician of Shakespeareism in Greece (a fact which is confirmed by the work of Maria Doxapatri, but also by the valuable Prolegomena that accompany the work),
