The Greek War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution or the Greek Revolution of 1821, was a successful war of independence by Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman Empire between 1821 and 1829. The Revolution found the Island of Hydra in possession of untold wealth from gold coins of the time, mainly as a result of its successful involvement in the wheat trade during the Napoleonic Wars. The Hydra fleet dominated the sea during the seven-year struggle, thus contributing decisively to the liberation of Greece, while sacrificing human lives, ships and money and highlighting leaders and fighters.
About the book: The doctor and mayor of the island, Antonios Lignos, gathered and catalogued documents and original manuscripts from the island’s archives which are accessible at the museum of Hydra, offered by ship owner and benefactor, Gikas Koulouras. Lignos also published Τhe Archive of the Community of Hydra (1778-1835) which contains a representative amount of documents from approximately 18,000 primary documents, manuscripts, codes and registers that outline in detail the pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary periods of Greek History. It consists of 16 volumes, here volume 9, for the year 1823.
