A remarkably rare first Greek edition of Richard Nikolaus von Coudenhove-Kalergi’s Paneuropa, the seminal work that helped establish the intellectual foundations of the modern European integration movement.
Originally published in 1923, Paneuropa was Coudenhove-Kalergi’s visionary proposal for a politically and economically united Europe, written in the aftermath of the First World War. His ideas predated the institutions of European integration by several decades and are now widely recognised as an important intellectual precursor to the European Union.
This 1927 Greek edition is of particular importance. It appears to represent the first Greek-language edition/translation of Paneuropa, making it an exceptionally interesting survival for collectors of Greek publishing, European political history and the origins of European integration.
The edition is also notable for its striking cover featuring the early Pan-European movement emblem — a red cross against a golden sun. This imagery was closely associated with Coudenhove-Kalergi’s Paneuropean movement from its earliest years and gives the book an immediate connection to the visual history of the European unity project.
A Book from the Intellectual Prehistory of the European Union
Coudenhove-Kalergi’s Paneuropa was not simply a theoretical political work. It became the foundation of the Paneuropean movement, which sought to overcome the political divisions that had repeatedly brought Europe into conflict.
The publication of this Greek translation in 1927, only four years after the original 1923 publication, demonstrates the international reach of the Paneuropean idea during the interwar period.
Coudenhove-Kalergi’s vision of European cooperation and federation anticipated many themes that would later become central to European integration. His movement attracted prominent European intellectuals and statesmen and formed part of the wider intellectual tradition from which post-war European unity emerged.
For collectors, this copy is therefore significant as a contemporary primary source from the formative period of the European idea, rather than a later historical account written with the benefit of hindsight.
