About the Contributors

Fotis Kontoglou (1895–1965)

One of the most influential Greek painters and iconographers of the 20th century. Kontoglou revived and shaped modern Byzantine iconography, mentoring major Greek artists such as Yannis Tsarouchis and Nikos Engonopoulos. His illustrations in schoolbooks of the era are highly sought after.

Demosthenis Andreadis (1869–1952)

A leading Greek educator, editor, and inspector of primary education. Andreadis played a crucial role in shaping modern Greek schoolbooks. His readers combined pedagogy, folklore, literature, and linguistic ideology during the politically charged debate between Demotic and Katharevousa Greek.

Historical Context: Katharevousa in Education

Katharevousa was a formal written language created in the 18th century as a bridge between Ancient and Modern Greek. For decades it served as Greece’s official educational and administrative language.
It remained in schoolbooks until 1976, when Demotic Greek replaced it as the official language of education.

This 1929 reader is therefore an important artifact of that transitional era.Condition
