Georgios Tsontos or Captain Vardas (1871-1942) was a Greek Macedonian soldier from Crete. In 1888 he entered the Evelpidon Military School and was sworn in as an artillery lieutenant in 1893. He took part in the Cretan Revolution of 1897-1898 as well as in the Macedonian Struggle. In Macedonia, together with Cretan volunteers, he took part in operations in the areas of Koresti-Kastoria-Florina-Monastiri. The nickname Captain Vardas was given to him during his action in the Macedonian War. He participated, as a Captain, in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). Tsontos reached the rank of Lieutenant General, while he left a rich archive of his own memoirs which served in various historical studies later. In 1932 he was elected Member of Parliament for Florina and in 1933 for Kastoria.
