An original 1940 Greek elementary school textbook, ΑΝΑΓΝΩΣΤΙΚΟ (Reader), Ε’ ΔΗΜΟΤΙΚΟΥ (5th Grade), published by the Οργανισμός Εκδόσεως Σχολικών Βιβλίων (Organization for the Publication of School Books), the official Greek state body responsible for educational textbooks.
This collective work was prepared by distinguished Greek educators and writers, including Dimitrios Kontogiannis, Georgios Megas, Pavlos Nirvanas, Dimitrios Zisis, and others. The volume is illustrated throughout by Evangelos Terzopoulos (1902–1990), an important Greek artist and illustrator.
The original hard cover features a striking patriotic image of two schoolchildren in blue uniforms: one carrying the Greek flag and the other playing a bugle. The title page bears a quotation by Ioannis Metaxas:
“Είστε Ελληνόπουλα και είναι μεγάλο πράγμα να είναι κανείς Έλλην.”
(“You are Greek children and it is a great thing to be Greek.”)
