One of the legendary pioneers who promoted the police genre was Apostolos Manganaris.  1935 he gave the Greek readers the first edition of Maska magazine, edited by Michalis Saliveros. The magazine had a wide circulation with contents of translated works of foreign, well known authors.

During the German occupation Maska temporarily discontinued, the publishing of its creator and the promotion of popular literature however did not.  Manganaris continued publishing two smaller sized magazines with similar content, Arachni and Assos, covering the period 1942-1943, the first with 34 issues and the second with 24 created by Magganaris and Apollon Papadimitriou of “Ankyra” editions.
