Anastasios Alevizos (1914 – 1985) was a Greek engraver, etcher and sculptor, who became famous under the name Tassos for his works on significant milestones of the 20th century history of Greece. His engraving on the poster portrays a girl seated on a suitcase in front of barbed wire, titled “Cyprus 1974.” Her expression conveys despair and sorrow, representing the plight of Cypriot refugees. Over time, it has come to symbolize the experience of all refugees who are forced to leave their homes due to war and aggression. This work became the basic motif of the Refugee Stamp issued in Cyprus in 1977 and is used to this day to provide financial support to the displaced.
The Panhellenic Union of Cyprus Support was an organization founded in Greece with the aim of supporting Cypriot Hellenism, especially during the critical periods of the 20th century. Its activities included the organization of events, fundraisers and other initiatives to strengthen the struggle of Cypriots for freedom and justice. It actively participated in events of support for the Cypriot people, especially after the Turkish Invasion of 1974 and the subsequent Refugee-Crisis. Posters of the time record numerous events and fundraising efforts aimed at collecting financial and material aid for Cyprus.
