The monumental exhibition From Theotokopoulos to Cézanne was held in the context of a successful political exchange between Greece and the USA on the occasion of the 2,500th anniversary of the birth of the Hellenic Republic. The exhibition “From Theotokopoulos to Cézanne” included 72 masterpieces that came from the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. These two museums hosted the exhibition “The Greek Miracle” with unique works of the 5th century BC. The title of the exhibition not only underlines its chronological limits but also recalls the influence that Greco had on Cézanne. The works were chosen with the aim of creating a “fantastic museum” of masterpieces covering three centuries of European painting. In addition to Greco, the greatest artists of Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Impressionism were represented in the exhibition with their top works. The exhibition was an unprecedented success, breaking all previous visitor records, exceeding 600,000, which made headlines and occupied the mass media for months. The projects were selected by a committee chaired by Academician-Professor Panagiotis Tetsis.
