This original Special Diamonitirion (Ειδικόν Διαμονητήριον) was issued in 2003 by the Holy Epistasia of Mount Athos, the governing authority of the Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain in northern Greece.
Far more than a simple travel document, the Diamonitirion serves as the official permit required for entry into Mount Athos, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited monastic communities and an important centre of Orthodox Christianity for over a thousand years. Every male pilgrim entering the Holy Mountain must obtain one of these permits, issued under the authority of the Holy Epistasia.
A particularly desirable feature of this example is that it was issued specifically for residence at the Holy Monastery of Iviron (Ιερά Μονή Ιβήρων), one of the twenty sovereign monasteries of Mount Athos and among the most historically significant institutions of the Orthodox world.
The document bears the official blue authorization stamps of the Monastery of Iviron, applied twice, confirming that the pilgrim had been formally accepted as a guest of the monastery and granted accommodation during his visit.
Unlike a standard entry permit, this Diamonitirion establishes a direct documentary connection with one of Mount Athos’s principal monasteries, adding historical and collectible significance.
This is an original document issued by the Holy Epistasia and completed by hand in traditional Katharevousa Greek, preserving the formal administrative style still used by the Athonite authorities.
It retains its original Mount Athos revenue stamp, affixed in the upper right corner, together with the official permit number 11397.

Diamonitiria were produced solely for practical administrative use and accompanied pilgrims throughout their stay on Mount Athos. After the pilgrimage was completed, most were retained by the visitor or simply discarded, making well-preserved examples increasingly difficult to obtain.
Collectors particularly value examples that retain their original revenue stamp, monastery authorisations, and governing signatures, especially when issued for one of the major monasteries of the Holy Mountain.
