N. A. Stratos – En Mémoire des Philhellènes qui Aidèrent à la Cause Hellénique (1821) et en Mémoire de l’Anniversaire de la Mort du Lord Byron – First Edition – Athens, 1922
Rare first edition commemorative pamphlet published in Athens in 1922 on the occasion of the First Centenary of the Greek Revolution (1821–1921).
The publication contains the speech delivered by Nikolaos A. Stratos in the Festival Hall of the National University of Athens on 7/20 April 1921, honoring the Philhellenes who supported the Greek struggle for independence and commemorating the anniversary of the death of Lord Byron, one of the most celebrated international supporters of the Greek cause.
Issued in French for an international audience, the work formed part of the official centenary celebrations marking one hundred years since the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence. Such ceremonial publications were generally produced in limited numbers for dignitaries, institutions, libraries and members of commemorative committees rather than for commercial distribution.
Of particular historical importance is the identity of the speaker. Nikolaos A. Stratos was a former Minister, former President of the Greek Parliament and leader of the National Reformist Party. In 1922 he briefly served as Prime Minister of Greece before being executed later that same year following the famous Trial of the Six, one of the defining political episodes of modern Greek history.
The pamphlet therefore combines several fields of collecting interest: the Greek Revolution, Philhellenism, Lord Byron, modern Greek political history and early twentieth-century Greek printing.
A scarce and attractive historical publication from a pivotal moment in Greek national memory.
