About the Work
First Greek edition of The Adventures of Telemachus (Les Aventures de Télémaque), one of the most influential didactic novels of the 18th century. This Volume II, translated by Dimitrios P. Govdelas and printed in Venice in 1803 by Panos Theodosiou, is illustrated with 15 original lithographs, making it a visually rich example of early Greek book printing.
About the Author
François Fénelon (1651–1715) was a French Catholic archbishop, theologian, and writer. As tutor to the Duke of Burgundy, he composed The Adventures of Telemachus to instruct the young prince in the virtues of wisdom, moderation, and justice. First published anonymously in 1699, the work imagines the travels of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, accompanied by his mentor (the goddess Minerva in disguise).
A rare and important example of early 19th-century Greek literary heritage, especially prized for its Venetian printing, period leather binding, and complete set of lithographs.
