Published in St. Petersburg in 1872 by L. Demis and printed at the Printing House of the Imperial Academy of Sciences (Τυπογραφείο της Αυτοκρατορικής Ακαδημίας Επιστημών), one of the most prestigious printing establishments in the Russian Empire. The Academy’s press was renowned for producing official governmental, scientific, and scholarly publications of exceptional typographical quality.
This scarce booklet sets out the statutes and operating regulations of the St. Petersburg Mutual Credit Company, one of the mutual credit institutions established during the rapid economic development of nineteenth-century Imperial Russia. Such organisations were created to provide cooperative banking and commercial credit facilities to merchants, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs, playing an important role in the modernisation of the Russian financial system.
Issued entirely in Greek, the publication reflects the prominence of the Greek merchant and commercial community in St. Petersburg. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Greeks were among the most active foreign merchant communities in the Russian Empire, maintaining extensive trading networks throughout the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe. Greek-language legal and financial publications such as the present work were intended to serve this prosperous diaspora and are today uncommon survivors of that commercial heritage.
Unlike literary works, publications of this nature were practical reference booklets, consulted in everyday business and frequently discarded once superseded. As a result, surviving examples in their original printed wrappers are considerably scarcer than contemporary Greek books and constitute valuable evidence of the economic and institutional history of the Greek diaspora in Imperial Russia.
