About this Booklet
A rare surviving example of early 20th-century Greek-language advertising ephemera, this beautifully illustrated booklet promotes Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills for Pale People, a famous international patent medicine of the time.
Created for the Greek market, the publication combines elegant Art Nouveau portraits of women with the symbolic “language of flowers”, associating each bloom with a sentiment.
Within its pages, the booklet lists testimonials and success stories of those “miraculously cured” by the pills — including a reference to Dr. Giuseppe Lapponi, physician to the Vatican, who reportedly used the medicine “with good results.”
The text claims the pills can treat a vast range of ailments — from anemia and nervous disorders to heart palpitations and fatigue — reflecting the fascinating world of early pharmaceutical advertising.
Historical Note
Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills for Pale People were widely marketed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the Dr. Williams Medicine Company, part of G. T. Fulford & Co. They were advertised globally, from Europe to Asia, and became one of the era’s most recognizable patent medicines.
This Smyrna edition is particularly scarce, offering a glimpse into early 1900s Greek commercial printing and cross-cultural advertising.
