An uncommon and historically important Greek medical book documenting the practice of prescribing and pharmacy in interwar Greece.

This is the 1927 Athens edition of Συνταγολόγιον (Syntagologion) by Dr. Nikolaos Ch. Moraitis, an early 20th-century Greek formulary devoted to medical prescriptions and pharmaceutical preparations.

The book was printed in Athens by the Printing Press of the Brothers I. Kouvelos (Τυπογραφείον Αδελφών Ι. Κούβελου) in 1927 and contains 222 pages.

The volume includes a foreword by Professor Spyridon Dontas (Σπυρίδων Δοντάς(1878–1958)), one of the important figures in the development of modern physiology and pharmacology at the University of Athens. In 1925 he became Professor of Experimental Pharmacology at the University of Athens. In 1927, the year of this publication, he also assumed the chair of physiology.

A window into interwar Greek medicine
The word «Συνταγολόγιον» literally refers to a collection or guide of prescriptions. Such works are particularly valuable for understanding the practical side of medicine and pharmacy before the dominance of modern mass-produced pharmaceutical products.

In the 1920s, prescribing and dispensing medicines still involved considerable knowledge of individual chemical substances, pharmaceutical preparations and compounded medicines. A formulary such as this therefore provides a fascinating snapshot of the terminology and pharmaceutical practice of the period.

Historical pharmaceutical significance

The original paper covers show substantial age-toning, staining, weathering and general signs of use, consistent with an almost century-old medical book. There is expected wear to the edges and surfaces of the covers. The binding remains intact.
