Arthur Schnitzler (1862 – 1931) was an Austrian author and dramatist. He is considered one of the most significant representatives of the Viennese Modernism. Schnitzler’s works, which include psychological dramas and narratives, dissected turn-of-the-century Viennese bourgeois life, making him a sharp and stylistically conscious chronicler of Viennese society around 1900.

Flucht in die Finsternis is written between 1912 and 1917 under the title Wahn (Delusion), appeared in the Vossische Zeitung in Berlin in May and in the Neues Wiener Tagblatt in July 1931. The story was published in book form by S. Fischer in the same year.

Hans Meid (1883 – 1957 i) was a German painter and illustrator. He was a simportant representative of impressionism in printmaking.
