Rare 1938–1939 Greek Ballet Archival Set: Original Signed Diploma & Theater Program – Foundational Greek National Opera History
An evocative piece of pre-WWII European dance history. The set includes two original documents from the prestigious A. Morianov Professional School of Rhythmic Gymnastics and Ballet in Athens, Greece.
It traces the early career of the celebrated avant-garde dancer Ira (Iro) Zoukova, offering an extraordinary look into the interconnected network of classical ballet, lyrical theater, and the iconic Epitheorisi (Greek musical revue) of the 1930s and 40s.
Included in this Lot are:
1. The Official School Diploma (July 27, 1939):
Issued to Ira Zoukova with highest honors (“Άριστα”). This beautiful, large-format document is adorned with classical borders, original revenue stamps, and an official embossed ministry seal. It features four incredibly rare, hand-signed signatures from the titans of 20th-century Greek culture:
• Adam Morianov: Legendary Russian emigré ballet master who founded Athens’ first professional ballet academy making him a pioneer of classical ballet education in Greece.
• Dionysios Lavrangas (1860 – 1941): The iconic composer widely recognized as the “Father of Greek National Opera.” He was a major figure in the development of Greek opera. His participation on the school’s examination committee connects ballet education with the wider emergence of organised operatic culture in Greece.
• Kostis Bastias (1901–1972): Renowned author, journalist, and the Director of Letters and Fine Arts for the Ministry. He occupied influential positions in Greek cultural policy and theatrical institutions, and was a central figure in the establishment of the National Opera. He served as General Director of the Royal (National) Theatre (1937–1941), the Greek National Opera (1940–1941 and 1959–1964), and the National Radio Foundation (1961–1963). Bastias was also the creator of several new institutions, including the State Literary Awards (1938
• Frank Choisy (1872-1966): Celebrated Swiss-Greek composer, musicologist, and educator.
2. The Original Performance Program (May 25, 1938):
An original four-page program for the school’s annual exhibition held at the historic Kotopouli Theatre. The interior pages detail a fascinating repertoire transitioning from classical Chopin and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake to contemporary American Tap Dancing (set to Jerome Kern). Ira Zoukova is prominently billed twice—once for a solo performance of Chopin’s Waltz No. 7 and once for a duet performance of Scriabin’s Etudes No. 1.
Historical Significance:
Founded by Russian emigré Adam Morianov in 1929, this academy single-handedly trained the vanguard of professionals who formed the bedrock of the newly established Greek National Opera in the 1940s.
While Morianov strictly taught rigid classical technique and eurythmics, his star pupils—like Ira Zoukova—brilliantly recycled this classical training into the choreography of Athens’ glittering epitheorisi (musical spectaculars). Zoukova would later achieve fame performing in light musical theater, collaborating with Attik’s famous Mandra artistic troupe, and pushing performance boundaries in the 1940s.
