Mao Zedong (1893–1976), also known as Chairman Mao, was a Chinese politician, political theorist, military strategist, poet, and revolutionary who was the founder of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). He led the country from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976, while also serving as the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during that time. His theories are known as Maoism.
About the book: In 1958 Mao publishes Nineteen Poems and launches the New Folk Song Movement in order to boost the excitement for the Great Leap Forward. The New Folk Song Movement was a movement of producing poems, referred to as folk songs, in mass quantity, from urban to rural areas throughout the country.
Zhou Zhenfu (1911-2000 ) was a Chinese poet and literary critic. He was the author of works on the history of Chinese literature. In the early 1950s, together with Zang Kejia, he edited the collection of Selected Poetry of Chairman Mao with commentary and notes.
Zang Kejia ( 1905 – 2004) was a Chinese poet. He was born in Zhucheng, Shandong province. Zang entered the Shandong Provincial First Normal School in 1923 and later trained at the Wuhan Branch of the Central Military and Political School. In 1929, he went to Qingdao University, and under the guidance of Wen Yiduo began publishing poetry. His first collection, Laoyin (Brand) appeared in 1937. Other collections followed. With the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Zang did cultural propaganda work for the army, and collections of his were published as well as volumes of army poetry. After the war, he was involved in editorial activities and published his first collection of short stories and prose. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he held several important positions, among them as chief editor of Poetry magazine. He also co-edited the “Selected Poems of Chairman Mao” with Zhou Zhenfu.
Guo Moruo (1892 – 1978) was a Chinese author, poet, historian, archaeologist, and government official. He was the first President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and remained so from its founding in 1949 until his death in 1978. He was also the first president of University of Science & Technology of China (USTC), a new type of university established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) after the founding of the People’s Republic of China and aimed at fostering high-level personnel in the fields of science and technology.
For the first 15 years of the PRC, Guo, with his extensive knowledge of Chinese history and culture, was the ultimate arbiter of philosophical matters relating to art, education, and literature.
