Rare Historical & Judicial Archive of Captain Ioannis G. Moutzouridis, 1916–1923
Offered is a rare and highly interesting archival group of 14 original historical items relating to Captain Ioannis G. Moutzouridis, a Greek military officer whose judicial history was connected with the turbulent period of the Greek National
Schism and the November Events (Noemvriana) of 1916.
The collection covers the period 1916–1923 and consists of 12 original military and judicial documents together with an original period photograph from Itzedin Prison, Crete.
The documents form a coherent chronological group rather than unrelated historical papers, allowing the development of the case to be followed through official documents issued over several years.
Contents
1. Original photograph – Itzedin Prison, January 1920
An original black-and-white period photograph showing three political prisoners behind the bars of their cell, including Ioannis G. Moutzouridis.
The reverse bears the handwritten inscription:
“Φυλακαί Ιτζεδίν (Κρήτης) / Ιανουάριος 1920”
(“Itzedin Prison, Crete / January 1920”)
together with the handwritten signature of Ioannis G. Moutzouridis.
This photograph provides a particularly direct personal connection between the individual and the historical circumstances documented by the archive.
2. Military judicial documents – 1917–1918
The archive contains original official military documents relating to the judicial proceedings against Moutzouridis in connection with the events of 24–25 November 1916.
Among the documents are referral papers from 1917, including documents bearing the signature of Leonidas Paraskevopoulos, an important Greek military figure who later became Commander-in-Chief of the Greek Army.
3. Warrant of imprisonment – 22 March 1918
An original military warrant issued in Athens by the Military Court of the 1st Army Corps, ordering the provisional imprisonment and transfer of the accused.
The document retains period stamps, signatures and official protocol markings.
4. Six judicial summonses – 1917–1923
The archive includes six original judicial summonses documenting different stages of the proceedings:
Three summonses from 1917
One from 1918
One from 1919
One from 1923
These documents record hearings, postponements and the charges brought against Moutzouridis.
Of particular interest is the 1923 summons from the Naval Military Court in Piraeus, where Moutzouridis is described as “former Captain”, reflecting his changed status at that stage.
Historical Significance
This collection represents an interesting primary-source archive relating to modern Greek history, particularly the Greek National Schism, the Noemvriana of 1916 and the political and military turmoil of the years surrounding the Asia Minor period.
Its chronological continuity is one of its strongest features. The documents follow the case from the judicial proceedings of 1917, through the imprisonment order of 1918, to the documented incarceration at Itzedin Prison in 1920, and the continuation of the proceedings in 1923.
The combination of official judicial documents and a personally signed photograph from prison makes this an especially interesting archival group for collectors of historical manuscripts, military history, political memorabilia and early 20th-century Greek history.
