German South West Africa (German: Deutsch-Südwestafrika) was a colony of the German Empire from 1884 until 1915, although Germany did not officially recognize its loss of this territory until the 1919 Treaty of Versailles.

Hugo von François (1861 – 1904 ) was an officer in the German protection force in the colony of German Southwest Africa, today’s Namibia. As military commander of Windhoek, he organized their defense during the Herero uprising.
