1967 Greek Royal Photography – King Constantine II and the Evzones
This lot consists of three original vintage black-and-white photographs documenting King Constantine II of Greece during Greek Orthodox Easter in 1967, shortly after the military coup of 21 April 1967.
The photographs show the King at a Royal Guard (Evzones) camp, including scenes of the traditional Greek Easter celebration. In the two larger photographs, King Constantine II is shown interacting with members of the Royal Guard and participating in the traditional Easter egg-cracking custom known as tsougrisma.
The smaller photograph shows members of the Evzones in ceremonial dress performing a traditional dance.
The photographs are accompanied by the original photographic backing paper, bearing the typography of Studio Alpha / Vassilis Psychos, Satovriandou 19, Athens. The paper also carries a handwritten date notation from 1967.
Historical context
The photographs date from Greek Orthodox Easter 1967, only nine days after the military coup of 21 April 1967. They therefore provide contemporary photographic documentation of the Greek monarchy and Royal Guard during the opening period of a major and turbulent chapter in modern Greek history.
King Constantine II was King of Greece from 1964 until the abolition of the monarchy in 1973.
