Historical Importance

This brochure originates from the steam-powered industrial plant of the Katsimantis family, part of the iconic industrial zone of Ermoupolis, Syros. Built in the late 19th century (c. 1888) and active in the early 20th century, the factory was known for producing a wide range of paints, varnishes, oils, drying agents, anti-corrosive coatings, resins, tars, and other industrial materials—a notable example of Greek industrial innovation of the era.

The Katsimantis factory formed part of the broader industrial boom of Syros, then the most technologically advanced city of Greece, and is today preserved as a protected industrial heritage monument within the Ermoupolis Industrial Museum. Surviving printed material from this factory is extraordinarily rare, as most commercial documents from this period were discarded after use.

Brochures such as this one—especially complete, intact, and printed locally by the historic Freris Brothers press—offer an invaluable glimpse into the marketing, industrial production, and commercial identity of early 20th-century Greece.
