Georgios A. Makkas (1818-1905) was a Greek university professor and physician. He was born in Chios on September 26, 1818. He studied medicine in Munich, Leipzig, Paris and Vienna. He returned to Greece and practiced the medical profession initially (1846-1848) in Syros and then in Athens. In 1849 he was appointed full professor of special nosology and clinic and became the director of one of its departments. He was also chief physician to King George I. He resigned in 1896 due to a serious illness he suffered, and was appointed professor emeritus. He was rector of the University during the academic year 1873-1874, while his son Nikolaos Makkas and his grandson Georgios Makkas also occupied chairs of medicine at the University of Athens. He was honored for his work, with the decoration of the superior brigadier.
