Unique vintage Greek chromolithograph double sheet from the 1950s, featuring dramatic and heroic figures from the Karagiozis shadow theatre tradition.
Designed by Ioannis Moustakas and published in Athens by Astir Editions, this sheet reflects an earlier and highly collectible period of Greek popular printmaking.
Moustakas was a central figure in the development and dissemination of Karagiozis theatre, supporting puppeteers and publishing illustrated pamphlets that helped preserve and spread this folk tradition.
Included Figures
- Megas Alexandros (Alexander the Great – heroic figure)
- To Fidi (The Serpent/Dragon)
- Giousouf Arapis (exotic strongman character)
- O Kritikos (the Cretan – regional warrior type)
The Story Behind the Scene
This set relates to the famous Karagiozis play “Alexander the Great and the Cursed Serpent”, where a monstrous snake demands the yearly sacrifice of a girl in exchange for water.
When the lot falls on the Pasha’s daughter, a reward is offered—but no one succeeds in defeating the beast. Finally, Alexander the Great appears as a heroic savior (often symbolically linked to Saint George), slays the serpent, and frees the land.
