Yannis Nikou, Constantine XI Palaiologos on the Ramparts of Constantinople, Signed & Numbered Limited Edition

190.00

A highly collectible signed and numbered limited edition fine art print by the acclaimed Greek painter Yannis Nikou, published in 2004 following his exhibition “Πολύμορφο Ταξίδι” (A Multifaceted Journey), presented at the Municipal Gallery of Thessaloniki during the 48th Dimitria Festival.

The print reproduces Nikou’s celebrated 2003 painting:

“Constantine Palaiologos on the Ramparts, Dawn of May 29, 1453”

The original artwork belongs to the collection of the Municipal Gallery of Thessaloniki and depicts one of the most poignant moments in Greek and Byzantine history: the final inspection of the walls of Constantinople by Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos shortly before the decisive Ottoman assault of 29 May 1453.

The Emperor is portrayed mounted on a white horse, clad in armor and carrying a shield bearing the cross. Around him fly Byzantine standards adorned with the double-headed eagle, while in the distance the vast forces of the besiegers gather before the walls of the doomed city.
