Maria Chrousaki (1899-1972) was a Greek photographer and volunteer nurse. She was born in Smyrna in December 1899. Her family moved to Athens before 1922 (Burning of Smyrna), maintaining their property and living according to the standards of the bourgeois society of the time. During the 1930s-1950s, she traveled throughout Greece, capturing with her photographic lens the Greek countryside, landscapes and everyday life. Her archive includes 35 albums of black and white photographs and their corresponding negatives, with subjects such as dancers, fishermen and scenes from everyday life. In 1971, she donated her archive to the National Gallery.
