Pantelis Prevelakis (1909 – 1986) was a Greek writer and professor of Art History at the Athens School of Fine Arts. He cultivated almost all genres of literature, writing prose, poetry, and plays. He translated numerous texts from the main European languages. He also distinguished himself in essay writing and in writing scientific works in the history of art, especially in the art of the Italian Renaissance. However, he is best known as one of the most important representatives of the prose of the Generation of the 1930s (1930). He was a very close friend of Nikos Kazantzakis.

About the book: The novel is one of Prevelakis’ best-known works and is based on autobiographical elements from his childhood in Rethymno. It chronicles the transition of Crete from Ottoman rule to union with Greece, presenting history through the eyes of a young boy. The third edition of the book was published in 1959, revised by the author, with improvements in style and language, and minor modifications to the text. It remains a classic of modern Greek prose and has been translated into several languages.

Giannis Kefallinos (1894 –1957) was a distinguished Greek engraver, book designer and professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Born in Alexandria to a wealthy family with roots in Cephalonia and Chios, he developed an early interest in the arts.  He was never interested in the publicity of his work, which justifies the name given to him by P. Prevelakis in his obituary as “the silent one“. He agreed to show the public only two completed works: The Peacock (1946) and The Ten White Lecythi (1956).
Gιorgos Varlamos (1922 – 2013) studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Giannis Kefallinos. He specialized in book technique and stamp design. He studied and worked with all types of engraving. In addition he illustrated over 200 books, as well as various posters with social content. He participated in international exhibitions, having been awarded in many of them, while in 1995 he was honored with a prize from the Academy of Athens.
