Iannis Xenakis (1922 – 2001) was a Romanian-born Greek-French avant-garde composer, music theorist, architect, performance director and engineer. Xenakis pioneered the use of mathematical models in music such as applications of set theory, stochastic processes and game theory and was also an important influence on the development of electronic and computer music. He integrated music with architecture, designing music for pre-existing spaces, and designing spaces to be integrated with specific musical compositions and performances.

The “Xenakis Week” (Semaine Xenakis) held in Athens from September 14th to 21st, 1975, was a significant cultural event celebrating the work of composer and architect Iannis Xenakis. This event marked Xenakis’s return to Greece after years of political exile, following the fall of the military junta in 1974. During the festival, several of Xenakis’ compositions were performed at notable venues, including the Herod Atticus Theatre. Pieces such as “Metastaseis,” “Pithoprakta,” “Achorripsis,” “Nuits,” “Polla ta Dhina,” “Herma,” “Evryali,” “Synaphae,” “Charisma,” “Anaktoria,” and “Empreintes” were featured, showcasing the breadth of his work.
