First edition of Arthur Cohen: A Memoir by his Daughter to his Descendants by Lucy Cohen, published by Bickens & Son, London, in 1919.
A particularly interesting association copy, signed and warmly dedicated by Margaret Morison to Lady Edward Fitzgerald Law.
Large 8vo format. Original publisher’s hard binding.
Collation: vi, 214 pages + 9 plates.
The volume carries notable historical interest through its connection to Sir Edward Fitzgerald Law (1846–1908), the British diplomat and financial expert who played a major role in the restructuring of the Greek economy during the severe financial crisis of the 1890s. Invited to Greece in 1892, Law introduced reforms to taxation, debt management, and public finances following Prime Minister Charilaos Trikoupis’ famous declaration: “Regretfully, we are bankrupt” (“Δυστυχώς επτωχεύσαμεν”).
Law later served on the International Financial Committee in Athens and remained British Minister Resident in Greece from 1898 to 1900. His marriage to Catherine (“Kaity”) Hatsopoulos connected him to one of Athens’ historic Byzantine families.
Condition:
Binding sound and complete. General age wear to boards and spine, with minor rubbing and marks consistent with age. Interior clean overall with occasional light foxing. Plates complete. The signed dedication page remains well preserved.
A scarce and attractive signed association copy with strong Anglo-Greek historical interest.
