IranAir, the national airline of Iran, has a history of commissioning decorative items that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the country. One notable example is this pierced repoussé metal plate featuring intricate designs. It typically showcase traditional Persian artistry, with motifs such as the Huma Bird with floral patterns, geometric designs, or scenes from Iranian history and mythology. The repoussé technique involves hammering the metal from the reverse side to create a raised design, while piercing entails cutting out sections to form openwork patterns, adding depth and complexity to the piece.
The Huma bird, right in the center of the plate, also known as the Bird of Paradise in Persian mythology, is a legendary and mystical creature with deep symbolic significance in Persian mythology. The Huma is often depicted as a bird that never lands on the ground, symbolizing the unattainable or the divine. It is famously used as the symbol of IranAir. The logo, designed in 1961 by Edward Zohrabian , represents flight, aspiration, and national pride, drawing inspiration from the mythical attributes of the bird.
